Find the grandmaster's move, then finish the game yourself

GamingLaunched Sep 2026

The story

ReplayChess starts you at the critical position of a famous chess game and lets you play it out for real, against a friend via a private link, a rating-matched opponent, or Stockfish running in your browser. Afterwards you see your match rate against the grandmaster's moves and the exact move where you diverged, with a practice mode to retry. 50+ legends from Morphy to Carlsen, 3,600+ ECO-coded openings playable from the position, tournaments, and a PWA install. For club and online players around 800-2000 who watch chess history videos and want to play the positions instead of just watching. Free to play with no ads; Player plan $4.99/month. Open source under MIT.

Overview

ReplayChess is a web app for playing chess history rather than watching it. You pick a legend (Morphy, Fischer, Kasparov, Carlsen and 50+ others), jump into one of their famous games at its critical position, and play it out against a friend via a private link, a rating-matched opponent, or Stockfish running as WebAssembly in your browser. After the game it compares your moves with the original line: match rate, the first move where you diverged, and a practice mode to retry. An ECO-coded openings encyclopedia of 3,600+ positions is playable the same way. It is aimed at club and online players (roughly 800-2000) and coaches; free to play with a $4.99/month Player plan; MIT-licensed on GitHub; installs as a PWA.
